8 Secrets They Don't Want You To Know About At-Home Tooth Straightening (pt.2)
(Don't Buy the Kit Before Reading This!)
SECRET #2 — SPACE DOESN'T JUST MIRACULOUSLY APPEAR
If you’ve ever got on a train in rush hour (or even worse, the London Underground or New York Subway), you’ll know what I mean by crowding. You have to overlap with one another a little, or turn yourself to fit into your gap.
Making space in the crowd is difficult, but not impossible.
Ask a few people if they don’t mind waiting for the next train (disclaimer: don’t do that, I can not be held personally responsible for what might happen next! 🤣)
You all have to take your backpacks off and breathe in a bit.
Some people might have to squeeze down into the train.
Some people might have to sit up straight and not slouch.
Some will be pushed up towards the doors closer than they would love to be! 🤦🏻
In dentistry, we have similar options when we plan this properly for our adult clients. But don't panic...
Taking our backpacks off and breathing in is always the preference, before we leave anybody on the platform!
We slenderise certain teeth within carefully measured limits — it makes them less triangular, and more rectangular, which is often a better “look” anyway.
When it is safe to do so, broadening your smile can make things looks more attractive by showing more teeth. The arc of your teeth can be made a little wider, and your teeth can be straightened out at the same time.
Once your teeth are upright they can shuffle past one another easier. If your front teeth lean backwards we can tip them forwards and make them upright.
Rarely, we have to consider carefully removing some teeth. Rest assured... Teenagers often have to lose teeth for tooth straightening, whereas 95+% of our adult clients do not.
The Well-Guarded Secret In At-Home Orthodontics
The well-guarded secret is that in comparison, At-Home Braces can only move front teeth, and they can only tip them forwards.
No big deal right?
Well, it might look ok on the 3D model, because the clever software brings the gum with the teeth on the computer screen.
... BUT it doesn’t show your lips/ cheeks and (importantly!) the aesthetics of how things look when you smile.
Your front teeth even support your lip structure — so tipping them forwards can mean your lips are permanently stretched outwards, which makes them look taut and thin 😕
If they get pushed way too far outwards, they could end up getting stuck half on the train and half on the platform! The gum recession that results can be painfully sensitive. (see Secret #7).
If you’re still thinking “well that’s ok, I’ll take that risk, I didn’t want those other options anyway” — I completely understand.
But be wary. The trouble is that once the train sets off, the damage is often done. Pushing the teeth back inwards to the safety zone can be difficult, costly, or sometimes impossible.
Besides... our clients have found that when we use a well-planned combination of the tooth straightening options (and choose the most biologically safe things first) it is painless. Removing teeth is rarely even necessary.
