8 Secrets They Don't Want You To Know About At-Home Tooth Straightening (pt.3)

(Don't Buy the Kit Before Reading This!)

Some snippets from an eBook that we are publishing soon 🥳 (Pt.1) (Pt.2) (Pt.3) (Pt.4) (Pt.5) (Pt.6) (Pt.7) (Pt.8)

No need for a full history lesson, but you probably weren’t aware that At-Home Braces (clear aligners) are based on technology which has been developing since the 1970’s. The world-leading company, Align Technology, has an annual revenue of nearly $2 billion and invests over $120 million per year in Research and Development.

Before you ask — no, I don’t work for them.

Invisalign Bournemouth: Barely Noticeable Attachments

Align Technology developed the use of tooth-coloured attachments temporarily bonded to the tooth surface, over which the clear aligners grip.

Attachments or 'Buttons' only work with Invisalign®

Over the last 10 years I have offered my clients all kinds of European and UK-manufactured alternative brands of clear aligners. Mostly they don’t have any attachments, or are unable to use the type and design which is proven to work best for moving teeth.

Here's the secret:

They can't use those attachments because mostly they are patented by Invisalign®, for obvious reasons!

So what answers do the other brands (now including the At-Home Brace companies) have?

Well, in true ‘Fake News’ fashion they use the lack of attachments in their advertising and marketing! They get around it by telling you “instead of using attachments we have our clear aligners cover a little of your gum-line which makes them push there instead.”

This was my genuine reaction on a Facebook group. This poor lady's gums are being starved of blood-flow because her aligners are "pushing there instead" 😧

And even more sadly, she's forced to rely on Facebook Experts to find out if her gums should be white like that?

Let’s cut to the chase. This is the bit you're really here for.

Do you really needed attachments?

Imagine this. You're trying to grip something to move it up, down or twist it. But your hands are wet with saliva (wow this has turned into a lovely hygienic analogy! 🤣) and all you're allowed to do is use flat open palms.

💡 That's exactly what aligners without attachments do.

The wet slippery plastic struggles to fully grip each individual tooth. Hardly surprising, right?

So what exactly can aligners without attachments actually do?

  • Imagine you’re in your garden in the summer, it’s 30 degrees (we wish!) and your partner decides it’ll be fun to camp out for the night.

  • You hammer a tent peg into the ground. It’s easy to hammer in, but you decide to leave it sticking out a little (I don’t recommend this, but it works for my analogy so go with it..!).

  • But… then you realise you need to move the tent peg slightly further away. You don’t feel like taking it out of the ground first — it’s only a short distance, after all. So instead you’ll just give it a push and see what happens..

Teeth Which Stick Out Due to Tipping Only

At-Home Braces work in a similar way. This is ’tipping forward’ (told you I’d explain it eventually!).

Sometimes tipping is helpful. But mostly, teeth actually end up looking like shorter teeth because the root of the tooth under the ground level hasn’t fully moved forward.

Instead, if you wanted to move your tent peg forwards properly (including the bit stuck in the soil), you’d need to hold it carefully on the other side to brace it whilst you push it from behind, right? It might take a bit more time, but that’s the way to do it to make the tooth look upright.

"Voila! This is what Invisalign attachments do."
Aligners Without Attachments Losing 'Tracking'

  • Act as a supportive hand on the other side of the tooth.

  • Mean that teeth ‘torque forwards’ not just ‘tip forwards’.

  • Make sure the aligners grip your teeth fully so you don’t lose ‘tracking’.

The other secret about only tipping teeth and not torquing them is that they easily drift back later. After all, two-thirds of the length of the tooth is the root which is under the gum-line.

The crown is the bit you see, but all Professional Tooth Straightening clinics know the root is the important bit for long-term results. And so moving teeth properly is how we have kept an excellent local reputation for years.

So yes — at Bournemouth Straight Teeth we do carefully plan attachments for Invisalign when needed, because we believe in giving our clients a Lifetime Supply of Smile Confidence.

They’re tiny, tooth-coloured, and we never use more than necessary. Often we can even put them on the inner surface of the tooth so that they’re hidden from view.
